“Hi, I’m Antonio Banderas. I’m not going to talk to you about my latest film today, but one of my other passions: the sea. I’m from Malaga, so I feel a very close bond with the sea. That’s why I’m collaborating with Oceana, an NGO that works actively to protect the oceans. You can support them too. Log on to www.oceana.org. or call 911 440 880”

This is how Banderas addresses listeners in one of the nine public service announcements, in both English and Spanish, which the Malagan actor has recorded for Oceana, which the organisation will be releasing in Europe to coincide with World Oceans Day, tomorrow Wednesday. The spots are already being offered to Spanish-language radio stations and television channels in the United States and South America.

Antonio Banderas’ collaboration with Oceana came about as the result of a meeting with actor Ted Danson, who is a good friend of his. Danson is a member of Oceana’s Board of Directors and one of the founders of Oceana, the leading international organisation dedicated exclusively to research for the protection and recovery of the oceans. The actor liked what Danson was telling him so much that he volunteered to do the announcements free of charge.

“Antonio’s support means a great deal to Oceana”, said Oceana CEO Andrew Sharpless. “He has the unique ability to help Oceana achieve one of our key goals: building a worldwide social base for the oceans – in the United States, in Spain and in Chile. My staff in Spain literally jumped and cheered when they saw the picture of him in an Oceana T-shirt recording the spots. We hope that this will get people all over North America, Latin America and Europe jumping with enthusiasm and signing up to help Oceana”.

Banderas’ spots for Spain mention that the actor has had close connections with the sea for generations, as a native of the city Malaga, something that this internationally acclaimed Spaniard flaunts with pride wherever he goes.

“Oceana fights to protect threatened species such as sea turtles and dolphins and to preserve the marine habitat. But Oceana needs your help”, says the actor. “Log on to the Oceana.org website and join Oceana. It’s easy: open up the Oceana.org page and sign up. I am Antonio Banderas and I am asking you to help us protect the oceans”.

Xavier Pastor, the Director of Oceana in Europe, has thanked Antonio Banderas for his generous support and is sure that the Malagan actor’s collaboration will be helpful in raising the general public’s awareness of the organisation.
